Regional R&I strategy: from talents to open innovation

Description

Campania is a dynamic and open ecosystem that is increasingly establishing itself as a global innovation platform, inspiring competitiveness and attracting talent, businesses and investments. A favorable environment in which it is possible to collaborate with 7 universities, 40 advanced research centers active in technology transfer and innovation services, 7 High Tech Districts and 21 public-private laboratories operating in aerospace, biotechnology, health and agri-food, energy and environment, cultural heritage, sustainable construction, ICT, nanotechnology, transport and logistics, blue economy and fashion system, 4 National Technology Centers spoke (HPC, Mobility, Biodiversity, Pharmaceuticals), 35 business creation support structures - 7 certified incubators and 2 national accelerators (VITA digital health and Terra Next bioeconomy).

Over 1400 innovative startups, 23 acceleration programs supported by the Campania Region and managed by incubators, accelerators, fab-labs and business service centers, and the largest community of university researchers and the National Research Council. Campania Region has become the reference point of an ecosystem that invests in talents and ideas and pursues shared goals of sustainable and inclusive development with all the regional stakeholders. A growth path highlighted and confirmed by a series of indicators that see Campania Region as the protagonist:



·      Campania has had increase its GDP by 5.5% in 2021 and 4.4% in 2022, above the figure expected for south Italy.



·      More than 1.400 innovative startups have made Campania the third largest Region in Italy, first for growth rate. In March 2023 start-ups grew compared to last year by almost 9% against +3% in Southern Italy and -1.7% in Italy,



·      Investments allocated to Research and Development Campania is positioned at the 7th place nationally and at the 1st place in the Mezzogiorno with a value of 1.37 billion Euro. By comparing R&D investments to GDP, Campania represents a best performer among the Southern Italian Regions, allocating 1.33% of its GDP to R&D, a constantly growing value since 2016, when investments in R&D on GDP were equal to 1.21%



·      First in South Italy for the number of researchers equal to 14.9 thousand units,



·      235.000 university students, first in the South and third in Italy for the number of graduates, 31.3 points above the national average.



·      Finally in terms of export development, Campania ranks first at the national level in which the high technology sectors contribute about 47% of the total



There are 9 areas of intelligent specialization within which regional research and innovation policies operate: Aerospace, Transport and Logistics, Biotechnology, Health, Blue Growth, Agritech, New Materials and enabling technologies, Energy, Environment, Sustainable Construction, Cultural Heritage, Tourism, Creative Industry, Fashion, Made in Italy and Design. In the new planning policies, great attention to the theme of sustainability, including transport, with the strengthening of the platform Borgo 4.0 and investments in urban air mobility and space economy. Campania is at the forefront of the development strategies of Open Innovation: it was the first Italian region to have a structured and continuous market, to facilitate the meeting between demand for innovation by large companies and public administration, and the technology offered by startups, spin-offs and SMEs. A continuous challenge that stimulates regional competitiveness and the ability to attract talent, businesses and capital.
