FLIM LABS is an Italian startup active in the fields of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy and spectroscopy. The company was founded in 2019 and since then it has been focused on the development of portable plug-n-play instrumentation and AI-driven softwares to simplify and encourage the broadmass-scale adoption of fluorescence lifetime as a key tool from biomedicine to food safety. FLIM LABS wants to encourage and lead the release of advanced fluorescence lifetime-based techniques to the industry. The aim is to provide a technology that is affordable, user-friendly, customizable and extremely versatile for industrial sectors such as food safety and chain quality control.

Portable FLIM instrumentation

Our instruments overcome the state-of-the-art FLIM technology providing a solid platform to perform fluorescence lifetime-based experiments and analysis. FLIM LABS technology is portable, plug-n-play, further upgradable, and simple to handle. The instrumentation works in conjunction with an AI-driven data analysis software that can be easily tailored to your needs. We want to encourage and support users to leverage fluorescence lifetime in their applications with a technology that is accessible and intuitive. We are indeed developing a do-it-yourself DIY ‘FLIM starter kit’, consisting of desktop-sized and battery-powered pulsed laser modules, with single-photon detectors included. At the heart of this kit there is our FLIM acquisition card, USB-powered and fitting in the palm of a hand. The FLIM card is based on a FPGA system architecture, a technology that is fully reprogrammable at the level of the instrument core functions and available at a competitive cost.

AI-driven FLIM analysis software

The philosophy behind FLIM LABS drives our innovation not only towards a re-engineering of FLIM hardware components but also towards a re-thinking of the all FLIM data interpretation process. We want to make FLIM-based techniques as accessible as possible. So, we have created a unique FLIM analysis user-experience by introducing AI-based algorithms in our software. The idea is to make data interpretation straightforward by automatizing, and thus minimizing user efforts: non-skilled customers can operate our FLIM instruments on their own. Our software takes advantage of a FLIM-phasors approach integrated with an AI algorithm, making the experience almost user-independent and reliable over different experiments. It also requires negligible input from the users, so that the obtained results are easier to reproduce. Our software takes into account ICT technology: we encourage a strong FLIM community by facilitating the access to in-cloud data archiving and online results storage.
