Supercap UPS: continuous power, zero breaks

The Super UPS is a power continuity solution designed for critical loads, such as medical and other sensitive applications, where even millisecond power interruptions can cause failures or service disruptions. Unlike traditional UPS systems that rely on lead-acid batteries, this solution uses supercapacitors to deliver instant power with zero transfer time. This technology preserves the protection advantages of double-conversion UPS systems while eliminating common battery-related issues such as rapid degradation, frequent replacement and high maintenance. The result is a more reliable and durable system that ensures continuous power supply, reduced maintenance needs and improved operational efficiency in critical environments.

Supercapacitor Energy storage System (SESS)

The SESS is a high-power energy storage system designed for nuclear fusion applications, where extremely high instantaneous power must be delivered and absorbed during the excitation of plasma confinement magnets in Tokamak reactors. In these environments, drawing the required pulsed currents directly from the electrical grid or from conventional batteries can be difficult and inefficient. The developed solution uses supercapacitor modules with high power density and low ESR, capable of handling symmetrical charge and discharge currents while responding instantly to rapid power transients. The Power Cabinet supplied for the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility at ENEA Frascati ensures more than one million operating cycles, high reliability and significantly reduced maintenance requirements. The system operates across a wide temperature range from -40°C to +65°C, maintaining stable performance even in demanding operating conditions.
