The Region of Sicily has set out its Smart Specialization Strategy – RIS3 Sicily as a basic policy instrument to pursue smart and sustainable growth and the knowledge economy in Sicily. Approved by the European Commission in August 2015 within European Union 2014–2020 Cohesion Policy, RIS3 Sicily is supporting the implementation of the EU Operating Program for Sicily (PO FESR SICILIA 2014-2020), with the investment of over EUR 4,57 billion (including national co-financing). Of this amount, 57% is concentrated on 4 key priorities: innovation and research (10%), the digital agenda (7%), support for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) (15%), and the low-carbon economy (25%). A wide and active partnership of the most significant regional actors, including firms, science and business parks, universities and other research institutions, civil society organizations as well as regional and local authorities contributed to design the Strategy, and are presently involved in its implementation. Based on the analysis of the strengths and potential of the regional economy as well as on business and entrepreneurial needs, RIS3 Sicily identifies the following 6 strategic areas for intervention:

• Health and life science
• Energy
• Smart cities & communities
• Tourism and culture
• Sea economy
• Agrofood

Specific actions supporting internationalization of Sicilian enterprises within the regional innovation areas are being implemented through the Operating Program 2014-2020. The regional administration is confident that full implementation of the Smart Specialization Strategy will help Sicily achieve the EU-wide goals of growth and jobs and reduce economic and social disparities, so contributing to pursue Europa 2020 strategy.
