David Bream

David is a Professor of Innovation and Director of Industry Partnerships in the School of Healthcare Enterprise and Innovation at Southampton University where he works with the Healthcare Innovator & Accelerator and the Institute for Medical Innovation.

David studied Physics and then Computer Science at university and started his career working in the Central Research Laboratories of Thorn EMI plc. Thorn EMI CRL was a world renown corporate research laboratory that generated Nobel Prize winning technologies. David developed radically new approaches to signal processing and high performance computing. David then joined the American computer company Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) where he transitioned from technical consultancy roles into business development roles. David became one of DEC's highest achieving salesman winning the "deal of the year" in 1999 - a £150M 10 year outsourcing contract with UK government. David then joined a spin-out company from Trinity College in Dublin that later floated on NASDAQ for $1 billion.  David then created his own start-up in the field of distributed computed.

David moved into the university sector in 2002 and joined Southampton University as a founding director of SETsquared  (www.setsquared.co.uk). SETsquared is the Enterprise Partnership of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey Universities in the UK. SETsquared is now widely recognised as a world-leading university incubator programme. David completed a seven year term as a board member of the UK Intellectual Property Regulation Board, the legal regulator responsible for the patent and trademark professions in the UK. David was Chairman of Governance from 2014 to 2017.

David has been a non-executive director or board observer at a number of high growth technology companies including a precision metrology company and a company in regenerative medicine developing products for the orthopaedic market. David consults with high-net worth individuals and family offices to develop strategy for investments in high-technology, high-growth opportunities.

David has a B.Sc in Physics, M.Sc in Digital systems, MBA, PG Diploma in Marketing and is a Chartered Engineer.
